The Parliament of Lithuania adopted an amendment to the constitution at a plenary session on Thursday to lower the age limit for candidates for deputies in elections to the legislative assembly from 25 to 21 years. 101 MPs voted in favor, with 22 abstaining and four opposed.

According to its initiators, this step will contribute to the involvement of active young people in politics and will serve to renew political life. Critics of the innovation noted that as a result, young people who did not have time to get an education and did not have enough life experience to govern the state would come to parliament.

The next parliamentary elections, when the new age limit will apply, will be held in 2024.
