Taiwan is developing missiles that can attack enemy air bases and shoot down cruise missiles, Reuters reports.

Taiwan last year approved additional military spending of NT$240 billion ($8.20 billion) over the next five years.

Taiwan plans to more than double its annual missile production capacity, approaching 500 this year, the island's defense ministry said.

In a report to parliament, the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology provided more details on the capabilities of the missiles and drones it is developing.

The Hsiung Sheng ground attack missile, which experts say can have a range of up to 1000 km, comes in two versions: one with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead to hit bunkers and fortified command centers, and the other with dispersive ammunition to hit from airport facilities.

By 2025, four new facilities will be built for new drones, including bases and repair plants.

Little is known about locally produced drones. The first batch of U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drones, which can be armed with long-range missiles, will enter service with Taiwan by 2025, the Department of Defense announced last month.
