A working group dealing with amendments to the Constitution of Kazakhstan is considering assigning the status of "founder of independent Kazakhstan" to the country's first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the NUR portal reported.

"The first President of the Republic of Kazakhstan is the founder of independent Kazakhstan, that is, this status will be determined. I think this status will be of great importance, because those merits, the objective fact that there (...) will be enshrined in the Constitution," said member of the working group Yermek Abdrassulov.

Nursultan Nazarbayev resigned as president in March 2019, he had been head of state since 1991. At the same time, the politician is endowed with the status of the leader of the nation (a separate law on this is in force) and remains a member of the Constitutional Council of Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev handed over the post of Chairman of the Security Council of Kazakhstan to the current president, Kassym Jomart Tokayev, during the protests of January 2022.
