The European Parliament commends the recent rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia over the decision to launch bilateral contacts, appoint special representatives and resume flights between the two countries, the report on Turkey, which was adopted today by the European Parliament said.

It is noted that MEPs consider this attempt a very positive development with a positive impact on prosperity and security in the region.

They urged both sides to continue these efforts with the aim of fully normalizing their relations and call on the EU to actively support this process.

Furthermore, the MEPs urged Turkey to pave the way for genuine reconciliation between the Turkish and Armenian peoples, including the settlement of the Armenian Genocide dispute, and to fully comply with its obligations to protect Armenian and other cultural heritage.

The European Parliament expressed hope that this may lead to a dynamic of normalization of relations in the South Caucasus and again urged Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
