French President Emmanuel Macron called on citizens to prepare for a complete cessation of Russian supplies, turn off the lights at night and take part in a nationwide period of "energy sobriety," AP reported.

According to Macron, there is no end in sight to the war in Ukraine, so the French should be prepared for costs to remain high.

“This war will continue," he said in a televised interview marking France's national holiday, Bastille Day. “The summer, early autumn will be very hard.”

"Russia is using energy, like it is using food, as a weapon of war,” Macron said. “We should prepare ourselves for the scenario where we have to go without all Russian gas.”

He said the government will prepare a "sobriety plan" to save electricity, which will begin with turning off street lights at night.  Macron assured that France will continue to strive to diversify its gas sources, calling for a faster transition to offshore wind farms and more European cross-border energy cooperation to survive the current crisis.

Macron's far-right and far-left political opponents have blamed EU sanctions for reducing the purchasing power of French consumers.  The French president gave no indication in the interview of a change in policy toward Ukraine. “We want to stop this war without getting involved in this war. At the same time, we want to do everything so that Russia doesn’t win, so that Ukraine can defend its territory. We don’t want a world war,” Macron said.
