Italian President Sergio Mattarella has not accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who earlier said he was resigning amid a political crisis, DW reported.

A statement from Mattarella's office read that the president "did not accept the resignation, and invited the prime minister to appear before parliament to make a statement." 

Draghi survived a vote of no confidence in the Italian Senate earlier Thursday, but the future of his government was called into question by a boycott vote by the Five Star Movement (5SM) party, a key coalition ally.

The Movement's parliamentarians refused to participate in Thursday's vote because they disagreed with parts of a bill to help with the energy price spike to which the vote of confidence was linked.

Draghi received a vote of 172-39, but the boycott posed a clear threat to his government.
