Demonstrators in Hungary have blocked one of the capital's main thoroughfares in the latest series of protests against recent changes to the country's tax code that have been going on for nearly a week, AFP reported.

The protesters blocked traffic in both directions on one of Budapest's main bridges over the Danube River. Many of the demonstrators were independent businessmen affected by legislative changes passed by the Hungarian parliament last week that they believe will lead to significant tax increases or job losses.

The wave of demonstrations has taken on an increasingly anti-government character since they began on 12 July.

Hungary's ruling Fidesz party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, used its parliamentary majority last week to pass changes against a popular tax scheme known as KATA, which allows small businesses and freelancers such as drivers to pay a flat, low tax rate.
