YEREVAN. - Attorney General of Armenia Aghvan Hovsepyan asked the Chief of State Police Service Alik Sargsyan to conduct an internal investigation and verification of information circulated in media that Kentron police department prevented professional activities of attorneys Vahe Hovsepian and Stepan Voskanyan on August 9.
Hovsepian also sent a photocopy of an article in Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Time) newspaper implying that the story most thoroughly voices the incidents and the decision of the Board of the Armenian Bar Association.
The Police Chief should report the results of the investigation of to the Attorney General.
The Armenian Bar Association called the actions of the Kentron Police Department against young activists of opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) in its statement issued on August 12 as illegal. The statement said that the lawyers underwent violence and were not allowed to thoroughly fulfill their professional activities.
Earlier, at a recent press conference, Police Chief Alik Sargsyan denied that the lawyers were prevented from carrying out their duties and were not allowed into the department. On Tuesday the attorney Vahe Hovsepyan presented the Attorney General a report on crime. The lawyer is confident that this case could set a dangerous precedent.
