The world community must refrain forever from testing nuclear weapons, this type of weapons must go down in history, UN Secretary General António Guterres said on Sunday.
"Our world has been held hostage by nuclear weapons long enough. These devices of death guarantee no victory or safety. By design, their only result is destruction. Let’s ensure the end of testing forever, and consign nuclear weapons to history - once and for all," he tweeted.
August 29 is the International Day against Nuclear Tests. It was established by the UN General Assembly on December 2, 2009 (resolution 64/35) at the initiative of Kazakhstan. The choice of date is connected with the closure on August 29, 1991 of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan, one of the largest in the world. The day has been celebrated annually since 2010.
