Oregon State Police are trying to determine the motives of a gunman who fired an AR-15 rifle a few hours earlier in a mall parking lot and then at a grocery store, killing two people and finding the gunman dead, Reuters reported.

Bend police responded to calls about an active shooter at the Forum Mall at 7 p.m. local time Sunday, City Police Chief Mike Krantz said at an overnight news conference.

The gunman opened fire in the parking lot of the center before entering the grocery store and shooting a man he immediately confronted. The man was taken to the hospital and later died, Krantz said.

Police found the shooter dead with an AR-15 rifle nearby, he said, noting that police did not open fire.

One person was wounded in the shooting, but his condition is unknown, Krantz said.

He did not disclose the identity of the shooter or the victims.
