India accused Turkey of blatant disregard for UN Security Council resolutions on Libya following violent clashes between rival militias in the capital Tripoli last weekend that left at least 42 people dead, Indian news site Wire reported Wednesday.

The U.N. Security Council held a briefing on Libya in New York on Tuesday. Senior U.N. officials and several individual countries expressed grave concern about the situation in the civil war-ridden country.

"The continued presence of foreign forces and mercenaries is detrimental to peace and stability in the country and the region," said Ruchira Kamboj, chair of the UNSC panel on sanctions against Libya and India's permanent representative to the UN. - There have been blatant violations of the arms embargo in Libya."

Turkey supports the Tripoli-based national unity government with troops, military training and mercenaries to fight the eastern faction led by the Libyan National Army, which is based in Benghazi.

Quoting a May 2022 report by a U.N. panel of experts, Kamboj said Turkey violated U.N. Security Council Resolution 1970 by providing military training to the national unity government forces.

"Moreover, in the same report, the UN panel of experts also noted the continued presence of Turkish-backed Syrian fighters in military camps of national unity government-affiliated forces in Tripoli," the Indian representative to the UN stressed.

According to her, such blatant neglect is a cause for serious concern.

Moreover, as Kamboj notes, these actions also violate the 2020 cease-fire agreement and therefore contribute to a "prolonged political stalemate" in the country.

"We reiterate that the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Libya must be preserved. The political process must be entirely Libyan-led and Libyan-owned, without imposition or outside interference," Kamboj said.
