Myanmar's military court sentenced former state councillor Aung San Suu Kyi to three years in prison on charges of election fraud, BBC reports, citing the politician's lawyers.

Aung San Suu Kyi, 77, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on 11 counts. If the politician is found guilty on the remaining charges, her cumulative sentence could be nearly 200 years.

According to the politician's lawyers, the new sentence involves hard labor. The public and the media were not allowed to attend the hearing, and Aung San Suu Kyi herself was banned from speaking to the press, writes the BBC.

On August 15, the court sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to another six years in prison in four corruption cases.

In April 2022, a local court had already sentenced the leader of the National League for Democracy to five years in prison on the first of the corruption charges brought against her after the coup d'état in the country.

Myanmar's democratic leadership was ousted in a military coup on February 1, 2021. The occasion was the alleged large-scale fraud in the November 2020 elections announced by the military. Protests against the coup were violently suppressed and resulted in local deaths.
