The Latvian government plans to sign a decree on September 6 on the creation of a state defense service (SSS) in the country, Delfi reports.

In this way the authorities intend to restore the military conscription, which was canceled in the republic back in 2007. According to the publication, men aged 18 to 27 will be drafted into the SGO.

“Among other things, women can also join the army from 2028, but this is on a voluntary basis,” the message says.

The first call may take place as early as January 2023. In the first year, it is planned to call about 1000 people, gradually this number will increase. Over the next five years, the number of people ready to join the Latvian Armed Forces should reach 50,000 people.
