Queen Elizabeth II has accepted the resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Reuters reported, citing Buckingham Palace.

After delivering his last speech as prime minister on Tuesday morning, Johnson went to an audience with Queen Elizabeth II at her residence in Scotland, Balmoral Castle.

After Johnson, the head of the ruling Conservative Party, Liz Truss, elected the day before, will go to the Queen. From Elizabeth II, she will come out as prime minister and, after the first speech in her new capacity, she will begin to form her own government.

Former Conservative leader Boris Johnson, who replaced Theresa May as prime minister in 2019, announced on July 7 that he was stepping down as prime minister and head of the UK's Conservative Party following a mass resignation of government members.

As a result of the election, on Monday the head of the British Foreign Office Truss was elected head of the British Conservative Party. Truss won 81.3 thousand votes, thus overtaking ex-Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, who received 60.4 thousand votes.
