Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the appointment of Liz Truss as UK's new prime minister, RIA Novosti reported.

"The procedure for the election of the head of state in Great Britain functions far from democratic principles. It takes place within the framework of the party that won the previous parliamentary elections. The UK people do not participate in this case in the change of government. The ruling elite there has its own attitudes. It's up to them how to build relations with the Russian Federation, and it's up to us to protect our own interests. And we will be doing this consistently, let no one doubt that," Putin said at a plenary session at the Eastern Economic Forum.

Truss was elected head of the Conservative Party in Britain on Monday and became prime minister on Tuesday.
