Papua New Guinea's leaders have proclaimed King Charles III as the new head of state.

Governor General Bob Dadaye and Prime Minister James Marape were joined by dignitaries at a ceremony outside Parliament in the capital Port Moresby, PA Media reported.

Papua is one of five countries in Asia and the Pacific where a British monarch is head of state. It also includes Australia, New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu.

According to local media reports, Marape and other leaders are scheduled to meet with Karl on Friday, which coincides with Papua New Guinea's 47th anniversary of independence.
