Hundreds of thousands of Catalans came out at demonstrations on September 11 demanding independence from Spain, La Vanguardia newspaper reported.

According to the Guardia, 150,000 people attended the action, while the organizers of the procession said 700,000 participants. Footage shows a huge crowd of people with placards shouting slogans calling for independence from Madrid and re-election.

Among those attending the demonstration were members of the top leadership of the Together for Catalonia party and former Barcelona mayor Javier Trias.

Catalonia's independence referendum took place on October 1, 2017. More than 90 percent of those who voted were in favor of the region's secession from Spain. After that, the former head of government Carlos Puchdemon signed a declaration of independence of Catalonia and called on all countries of the world to recognize it as a sovereign state. The Spanish Supreme Court later found the organizers of the referendum on independence of the autonomy guilty of sedition and sentenced them to long prison terms, and Pujdemont fled the country.
