A delegation of Taiwanese lawmakers has traveled to Washington, D.C., where they will hold talks with a number of U.S. officials, Radio Taiwan International reported.

The parliamentarians will meet with their U.S. counterparts and hold closed-door talks with representatives of the U.S. State Department and Defense Department, which deal with the Taiwan issue.

The delegation includes four representatives of the opposition Kuomintang Party, which is considered to be more loyal to cooperation with the PRC, and one deputy from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. They will also be joined a little later by a member of each party.

The Taiwan issue has been an open one since 1949, when the Communist People's Republic of China was proclaimed on the mainland and the previously ruling Kuomintang party fled to Taiwan. Beijing insists on the one-China principle, according to which both the PRC and the Republic of China in Taiwan cannot be recognized simultaneously.
