The U.S. government will reduce military aid to Egypt by $130 million because of Cairo's failure to comply with a number of human rights requirements, Bloomberg reports.

According to the agency, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had to confirm that Egypt had met human rights requirements. The U.S. Congress gives Cairo $300 million a year in aid conditional on human rights. This year's aid package will be only $170 million. Cairo will get $75 million of it if it releases about 500 political prisoners.

In addition, Washington will send to Cairo about $1 billion, which is not subject to strict human rights checks by the local authorities.

The U.S. can continue to provide Egypt with military aid and at the same time put pressure on President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the issue of the treatment of political prisoners.
