The heads of the SCNS of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Saimumin Yatimov and Kamchybek Tashiev, held talks that resulted in the signing of a protocol providing for the withdrawal of troops from the border.

According to Sputnik Tajikistan with reference to the head of the press service of the Sughd Oblast government, Muzaffar Yunusov, the meeting took place on the territory of the Guliston border crossing. The parties discussed issues of stability in the border regions of the republics, as well as the need to observe the ceasefire.

The meeting resulted in a peace protocol consisting of three points:

1. Withdrawal of troops from the border line to the places of permanent deployment;

2. Only the border guard detachments would remain on the border between the two countries;

3. Continuation of the process of settlement of border issues and normalization of the situation in the border area.

Another aggravation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border occurred in the morning of September 16. The parties accused each other of firing. Fierce fighting continued all day along almost the entire perimeter of the border, and a cease-fire was achieved only by nightfall. On the morning of September 17, sporadic clashes resumed.

According to Kyrgyz reports, the fighting killed 59 Kyrgyz citizens and injured 163. Tajikistan reported 41 dead and several dozen injured.
