Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to discuss with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during talks in Astana the prospects of the Turkish mediation on Ukraine, said the official representative of the Turkish leader Ibrahim Kalin, RIA Novosti reported.

According to him, Erdogan will discuss with Putin "prospects, steps we can take to achieve a cease-fire." He noted that there are very many "pitfalls, traps and pits" for reaching a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Kalyn added that during phone talks with Erdogan, the Russian leader said he was ready for talks with Kiev mediated by Ankara.

Putin will travel to Astana this week for the summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), and he will also hold a series of bilateral meetings. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov did not rule out a discussion at a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about Ankara's proposal to hold talks between Moscow and the West on Ukraine.
