The Welsh government announced Sunday that bird flu has been detected in poultry at a facility in England, The Guardian reports.

The presence of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza was confirmed by Gavin Watkins, acting chief veterinary officer for Wales, at the site. This is the first confirmed case of bird flu in Wales since Oct. 1.

U.K. health agencies have reported that the public health risk from the virus is very low, and food standards agencies have stated that avian flu poses a very low risk to food safety.

The Welsh government informs that a 3-kilometer protection zone and a 10-kilometer surveillance zone have been declared around infected premises to limit the risk of spreading the disease.

He added that the movement and congregation of birds in these areas is restricted and all farms holding birds must be declared.

Bird owners were urged to remain vigilant and ensure a high level of biosecurity. Farmers are advised to first consult a veterinarian if a bird is sick and if avian influenza is suspected.
