Poland may not receive 75 billion euros in regional aid from the European Union, the newspaper Rzeczpospolita reported.

The European Commission will not reimburse the country's investments in four programs agreed under the EU budget for 2021-2027, the newspaper said, citing comments by Director General for Regional and Urban Policy Marc Lemaitre. EU spokesman Stefan De Keersmaecker said Poland had not met the conditions for receiving funds.

The potential freeze on the funds, which have played a key role in Poland's rapid economic transformation since it joined the EU in 2004, came after the EU blocked payments of €35.4 billion in post-pandemic aid. This came after Warsaw refused to undo changes to its judicial system that Brussels says give politicians too much influence over the courts and undermine the rule of law.

Jarosław Kaczyński, who heads the ruling Law and Justice party, recently said he doubts Poland will receive post-pandemic funding before next October's general elections.
