The Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the Australian ambassador after Canberra's statements refusing to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. The Times of Israel wrote this, citing government sources.

The Australian ambassador was told that the Foreign Ministry's remarks about Israel's capital status were a "pathetic decision," the newspaper's source said. It is noted that Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid also criticized Australia's position on the issue.

Israeli authorities are also seriously concerned about possible Australian recognition of a Palestinian state, as the ruling Labor Party had already been pondering this scenario several years ago, the Times of Israel wrote.

On Tuesday, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed the reversal of the previous government's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The current center-left Australian government believes that the final status of Jerusalem should be resolved through peace negotiations. Thus, the authorities who came to power in May 2022 reversed the previous government's decision to recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The Australian embassy, on the other hand, has always been in Tel Aviv.
