Italy's new prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has begun forming a government. She appointed Giancarlo Giorgetti of the League party as economy minister and said Antonio Tajani of Forza Italia would head the foreign ministry, Reuters reported.

Meloni of the Brotherhood of Italy party read out the list of ministers after President Sergio Mattarella gave her the mandate to form the government.

The interior ministry will be headed by Matteo Piantedosi, a career civil servant who is not in the party, and the defense ministry by Guido Crosetto, one of the founders of the Italian Brotherhood.
