Romania will speed up defense procurement and intensify talks with Turkey, Bulgaria and Georgia to counter the potential consequences of the war in Ukraine toward the Black Sea, the country's Supreme Defense Council announced, Reuters reported.
The Black Sea is crucial for the transportation of grain, oil and petroleum products. Its waters are shared by Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine and Russia.
"Proposals to counter potential threats so as to maintain peace in the Black Sea region and avoid conflict expansion were analyzed," the council said in a statement.
The proposals include strengthening Romania's armed forces, accelerating military procurement programs, holding more NATO exercises on its territory, intensifying negotiations with Black Sea neighbors and developing interconnection projects in the wider Black Sea region.
Romania has a common border with Ukraine, 650 kilometers long, on which the U.S. missile defense system is deployed, and since this year a permanent combat group of the alliance.
