Polish general Piotr Trytek was appointed head of the European Union mission to train Ukrainian troops, said Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak.

Earlier, the EU agreed to create the Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM) in support of Ukraine, which aims to strengthen the country's military capabilities.

Trytek, commander of Poland's 11th Armored Cavalry Division, served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

EUMAM Ukraine will be headquartered in Brussels, with operational command centers in Poland and Germany. Most of the training will take place in Poland.
