Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, a statement published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The diplomats discussed topical regional issues, paying special attention to the current situation in the Persian Gulf zone.

"The commonality of Moscow's and Tehran's positions in favor of overcoming all the existing contradictions here by political and diplomatic means taking into account the interests of the Middle Eastern states was confirmed," the Russian Foreign Ministry explained.

Furthermore, the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed to the damage to be done by the Western media information campaign, which can lead to a dangerous rise in tension in this strategically important region in a difficult international situation.

Lavrov and Abdollahian also touched on the situation in the South Caucasus and a number of other issues of mutual interest.
