YEREVAN. - Opposition Armenian National Congress congratulated Nagorno-Karabakh’s 20th anniversary.

“The session that on September 2, 1991, convened delegates from all councils of Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous region and Shahumyan region declared the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) encompassing the territory of Karabakh and Shahumyan regions. This step was possible and gained certain international status due to national democratic movement and struggle. Today NKR celebrates 20th anniversary of its independence. Over these years the country faced hundreds of obstacles and challenges, ranging from unequal war to economic hardships and each time proved the skills and inalienable right to live as an independent state.

All Armenian people and particularly citizens of the Republic of Armenia and their leadership made the greatest contributions for NKR victories. Armenia’s diplomatic efforts availed NKR elected authorities to represent their country on the international arena as an equal and independent entity. This was the clue to international recognition of Karabakh’s right for self-determination, which is a crucial point in the talks on conflict settlement. Unfortunately the policies of Armenia’s future leadership brought to naught this substantial leverage, while the authorities of NKR tolerate that until now. Armenian National Congress congratulates the people of NKR on 20th anniversary of their independence and believes that it will restore its former status on the international arena and will overcome its inner challenges, ensuring free and independent basis for sustainable development,” reads the statement.
