Portugal's government plans to experiment with the introduction of a four-day workweek in both the public and private sectors, the newspaper El País reported.

According to its information, the project will be implemented from next summer. It does not provide for a reduction in wages of workers. Until January 2023, applications will be collected from companies interested in the experiment, which will last six months. The Portuguese government will not subsidize companies participating in the pilot project in order to get an objective evaluation.

The second phase of the project is expected to roll out in the public sector in 2024. In addition, in one phase, 60 randomly selected companies will receive grants to conduct a study to compare the effect of introducing a four-day week with businesses that maintain a traditional work schedule.
