Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said a failed assassination attempt would push people into the streets, as in Sri Lanka.
“Either we will have a peaceful revolution or a bloody one,” the former prime minister said in his first appearance Friday a day after he was shot in the leg at a rally in Punjab province. “People will take to the streets like Sri Lanka. There will be chaos.”
Pakistani police used tear gas to disperse protesters in major cities. Khan's party called for nationwide demonstrations after a shooting at a rally wounded the former prime minister, Bloomberg reported.
The former cricket star had earlier accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and a high-ranking intelligence agency general of the attack. Sharif's government denied the accusations. It condemned the incident and called for an investigation.
Khan said he learned of his assassination plan the day before the assassination attempt. He said two gunmen had tried to kill him in the city of Wazirabad the day before by opening fire on a protest march he was leading.
One person was killed in the attack and 11 others were wounded. Khan also said three men had developed a plan to kill him. He did not give names or provide any evidence for his claims.
