Western intelligence services played a key role in organizing mass riots in Iran and further spreading misinformation about the situation in the country, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said.

"We note the key role of Western intelligence services in the organization of the mass unrest in Iran and the subsequent spread of disinformation about the situation in the country with the support of the Persian-language Western media under their control.

We see this as blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state," Patrushev said in Tehran at a meeting with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, as quoted by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
