Israel has no production capacity to supply Ukraine with air defense systems, said retiring Defense Minister Benny Gantz, JPost reported.
“It is clear that even if it decided that we change our policy, it is impossible to empty our supply of air defense systems,” Gantz told reporters. “We are checking every day what can be done and how we can expand our aid, but we must not forget that NATO stands behind Ukraine.”
Israel's air defense systems, including the Iron Dome and Arrow systems, are co-produced with the United States. Last year, Washington passed a $1 billion funding bill to replace the Tamir interceptor missiles used in the Iron Dome batteries.
Gantz made this comment as Kiev continues to push Israel to supply weapons.
Israel has provided humanitarian aid as well as medical equipment, but refuses to send any weapons that could be considered lethal, including air defense systems. Foreign media also report that Israel is helping with intelligence and has offered to help develop early warning systems.
Although Gantz has repeatedly stated that Israel will not be able to provide air defense systems because of restrictions and a host of operational considerations, there are a number of non-lethal systems that could be provided.
Defense sources have said that Israel is exploring daily what can be provided.
