At Christie's auction in New York, a painting by Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh "Orchard Surrounded by Cypresses" is sold for a record price for this painter. The painting from the collection of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen sold for $117 million, The Art Newspaper reported.

Previously, the most expensive painting sold at auction was a version of "Portrait of Doctor Gachet" - a Japanese businessman paid $82.5 million for it in 1990.

Allen's art collection became the most expensive private collection in the history of the auction. Sixty lots were sold for $1.5 billion.
