Last weekend, a mob of more than 200 people burned a woman alive in a village in the Indian state of Bihar. Rita Devi, 45, was attacked over suspicions that she was a witch. A month earlier, she had been blamed for the death of a man with a chronic illness, the Hindustan Times reported.

The man's family reportedly summoned an exorcist from the neighboring state of Jharkhand, which drew large crowds. But when the exorcist failed to give them answers, the crowd went on a rampage and headed for Devi's house. The angry mob allegedly stormed the grounds of Devi's house and beat her, then doused her with gasoline and set her on fire.

So far, at least 14 people have been arrested in the murder case, and 65 others have been identified. Police said they are reviewing video clips to identify more suspects.

Authorities are also investigating possible police negligence. Devi's family said they reported threats against her a month before the grim incident.

Witch hunts are frequently reported in remote areas of Bihar, Jharkhand and other nearby states. According to national data, between 2001 and 2012, about 2,100 such killings occurred across the country.
