The level of air pollution in Armenia has increased by 30-40% over the past five years mainly due to the increase in the number of cars. This statement was made by Gayane Shahnazaryan, Deputy Director at the Center for Hydrometeorology and Monitoring of the Ministry of Environment of Armenia, told reporters on Tuesday.

She added that 70% of air pollution is caused by cars. Shahnazaryan stated that there is an increase in air pollution in Yerevan.

"The exception was 2020 and 2021, which was due to the coronavirus. The most polluted administrative districts are Shengavit, Nor Nork and the Central Administrative District. In contrast, Alaverdi, Lori province, has seen a decrease in air pollution due to suspensions of the molybdenum plant. If in 2017 the sulfur emission was 38 tons, now there is none," the expert explained. 

Shahnazaryan noted that until 2026 there are legislative changes, the adoption of which will have a major impact on the management of processes related to air pollution.

"In addition, now there are already benefits for the import of electric cars, which will have a positive impact. Greening the environment also has a positive impact, so in parallel with urbanization it is necessary to intensify the process of greening as well," she said.

In times of strong air pollution, the expert advised to wear medical masks and close the doors and windows.

Gayane Shahnazaryan admitted that due to low salaries there is a shortage of qualified personnel and a lack of modern equipment.
