Israel may revoke the right to repatriation of grandchildren of Jews, which could affect tens of thousands of natives of Russia living in the country, RIA Novosti reported citing the Israeli lawyer Eli Hurwitz.

The reason for the changes in the law on repatriation may be the parliamentary coalition formed after the November 1 elections, part of which are far-right forces, demanding cancellation of the paragraph on grandchildren in the law of return. Under the current law, national identity is defined by a Jewish mother. "Such a person is called in legal practice the last Jew. Two generations are counted from him, to his children and grandchildren. And they, too, are entitled to repatriation," Hurwitz explained.

The lawyer believes that the abolition of this rule will affect thousands of natives of the former Soviet Union. The country's authorities regularly deprive people of their citizenship after an election check. Hurwit zrecommends that those "who are not Jewish by mother" hurry up before the legislative window closes.
