Turkey's Ministry of National Defense has confirmed an air operation in northern Iraq and Syria, Anadolu agency reported.

The ministry said the Turkish air force acted in accordance with the right of self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The air force is conducting an operation against the Kurdistan Workers' Party and the Kurdish People's Self-Defense Forces, which form the backbone of the Forces of Democratic Syria, controlling most of the provinces of Hasakeh and Raqqa, as well as the area of Kobani on the Euphrates and northeast of Deir ez-Zor, TASS reported.

Earlier, Farhad Shami, a spokesman for the SDF, said that the Turkish air force was carrying out airstrikes on the Kobani and Hasakeh areas in the north and northeast of the Arab republic.
