Estonia's Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) eastern prefecture chief Tarvo Kruup said that 15 new radars will be installed to enhance security at the country’s border with Russia, reported the ERR state broadcasting portal.

At present, around 70 percent of the Narva River border with Russia is covered by surveillance equipment. However, the PPA considers this insufficient as it does not provide border guards with a full overview of the area.

To this end, the PPA is planning to build 15 new radar stations in the border area of Ida-Viru County over the coming years. The installation of separate drone detection and counter-drone systems is also planned, consisting of radar and other combined systems, as well as accompanying border surveillance, Kruup explained.

Kruup made it clear that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Estonia wants to buy suitable places from local self-government bodies to build the necessary radar positions. The municipality of Narva was also offered to build a new surveillance system in Estonia and to build everything necessary for it in the place where the dismantled monument of the T-34 tank used to stand.
