Russia and Iran may cancel visas for citizens of the two countries, Tehran is waiting for a response from Russian officials, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said Monday, RIA Novosti reported.

"There is such a prospect. Iran agrees with the abolition of visas between the two countries. They have even taken steps in our country for this issue. We are waiting for the opinion of Russian officials. If Russia, too, like us, would declare that there is such readiness, we can announce a visa-free regime in a short time," Jalali said at a press conference when asked whether the prospect of achieving a visa-free regime between the two countries this year is now evident.

"From our side there is full readiness for the abolition of visas between our countries. If Russia takes such a decision at the highest level, we can even announce visa-free regime between our countries in 2023 in the coming months," the head of the Iranian diplomatic mission added.
