Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin commented during his daily briefing today, February 16, on the U.S. Senate passing resolutions related to the balloon flight over U.S. territory.

"These resolutions do not reflect the basic facts. They are solely intended to score political points and dramatize the situation," said the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman.

According to him, China strongly disapproves of them and strongly opposes them.

"We urge the U.S. Congress to respect the facts, respect the spirit of international law and basic norms in international relations, immediately stop vilifying China and stop taking actions that could aggravate the situation," Wang Wenbin stressed.

A Chinese balloon, allegedly intended to gather intelligence - Beijing denies this - was in the skies over Canada and the US for a week before President Joe Biden ordered its downing. The episode strained relations between Washington and Beijing, causing Secretary of State Antony Blinken to postpone a trip to China.

In response to the balloon flight, the U.S. Senate passed two resolutions condemning the use by the People's Republic of China of a high-altitude surveillance balloon over United States territory as a brazen violation of United States sovereignty.
