The number of victims of the consequences of a tropical cyclone that brought heavy rains to the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo has risen to 36, the portal G1 reported on Sunday, citing the state government. Earlier it was reported about 24 deaths.

Within the last day in the region the monthly norm of precipitation fell, in the most affected San Sebastian and Bertioge this index reached a record 627 and 683 mm. The impact of the elements led to numerous floods and landslides, destroying homes and infrastructure. Roads on major highways connecting the state capital of Sao Paulo with coastal areas and with neighboring Rio de Janeiro were interrupted. According to local authorities, dozens of people are still under the rubble.

In five municipalities, which suffered the brunt of the disaster, declared a state of emergency. Water and electricity supplies are disrupted in many areas and cellular communications do not work. More than a hundred rescuers are involved in the fight against the consequences. The army aviation will be sent to their aid.

The local authorities have cancelled all carnival events. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has promised to assist in overcoming the consequences of the natural disaster. The head of state interrupted his vacation to visit the affected region on Monday.
