Senior U.S. and Taiwan officials have concluded discussions on a range of security and diplomacy issues, including the situation in the Taiwan Strait and tensions between the United States and China amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A source in diplomatic circles told the Voice of America.

Substantive high-level meetings between U.S. and Taiwan representatives followed consultations between the two countries organized by the American Institute in Taiwan on Jan. 6.

The American Institute in Taiwan is responsible for implementing U.S. policy toward Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979 because the U.S. does not have official relations with Taiwan.

White House Deputy National Security Adviser Jonathan Finer, Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and other U.S. officials met for several hours with a delegation led by Taiwan National Security Adviser Wellington Koo and Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

U.S. officials said Washington's longstanding policy remains unchanged, but would not confirm or deny Tuesday's talks.

State Department spokesman Ned Price could not comment on any specific meetings, but he said that they have a strong informal relationship with Taiwan and continue to engage with Taiwan in accordance with their longstanding policy.
