The condition of former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, who is undergoing treatment at a Tbilisi hospital, is critical and if his weight loss continues, it may lead to irreversible processes. Georgi Grigolia, a doctor at the Georgian ombudsman's office, said this on Monday, RIA Novosti reported.

"Cachexia is getting worse. What is happening to Saakashvili is natural: he is losing weight, there is a process of destruction of muscle and already bone tissue. This is happening because he is not receiving adequate treatment," Grigolia told reporters. According to him, if "the weight of the politician decreases to 55 kilograms, irreversible processes will begin and he will be confined to bed." The doctor said that Saakashvili currently weighs 64 kilograms but the trend of weight loss is still there.

Doctors of the ombudsman's office examined Saakashvili on February 19. The official conclusion of the group of doctors says that the patient has a loss of balance and coordination, reduction of mental functions, the process of self-dissolution of body tissues, muscle atrophy, cachexia of the fourth degree, peripheral and vegetative neuropathy has started.

Saakashvili's family members report daily on the politician's grave condition. Earlier, independent doctors reported that Saakashvili was poisoned by heavy metals. The Tbilisi City Court considered a case on the possible postponement of Saakashvili's prison sentence in order to treat him in an overseas clinic, but the court rejected the request of his lawyers.
