The current president of Montenegro, Milo Dukanovic and the chairman of the Europe Now movement and the former minister of economic development, Jakov Milatovic, have passed to the second round of the presidential elections which will take place on April 2, informed the country's national election commission.

According to the election commission, Dukanovic garnered 35.37 percent of votes, and Milatovic—28.92 percent. Candidate Andrija Mandic, who is in favor of Montenegro having relations with Russia and Serbia, got 19 percent of votes.

The elections took place in the conditions of a protracted political crisis, which followed the defeat of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro in the 2020 parliamentary elections; the party's chairman is Dukanovic.

The president of the country is elected by popular vote for a five-year term and can hold this position no more than twice. Montenegro is a parliamentary republic, and the head of state performs mainly representative functions. However, the president plays an important role in the formation of the government and nomination of the candidate for the prime minister.
