Thousands of Filipinos living near the Mayon volcano took refuge in shelters on Sunday after authorities warned of health risks from ash and toxic gases emitted from a roaring crater.

Seismologists said at least one volcanic earthquake had been recorded in the last 24 hours, and hot rocks were falling from the Mayon volcano in the central province of Albay.

Over 12,800 people were taken to evacuation centers, the Philippine Civil Defense said.
