Female persons aged 18 to 27 will also have the right to apply for term military service in Armenia. Defense minister Suren Papikyan announced this on Monday during the second and final reading of the package of bills on introducing amendments and additions to the law on military service and the status of servicepersons and related laws at the special session of the National Assembly.

According to him, the service for women in the army will be carried out on a voluntary basis. According to the proposed changes, the service period for women will be only 6 months. After that, they will receive a one-time payment of 1 million drams. In case of early discharge due to health conditions, the amount will be divided over months. In addition, these servicepersons will receive a certain salary during their service. However, the payment amount has not yet been determined. According to the plan, it should take into account the minimum consumer basket in Armenia.

"Women drafted into the army will be assigned to a military unit without the possibility of a draw and being transferred to other military units," the defense minister added.

In addition, a special barracks building will be built for as part of a training military unit, and the women's troop will be stationed there. A women's battalion will be created on the basis of this troop, with the prospect of forming a women's regiment. There will be women in the commanding staff, too.

Papikyan noted that the military service will be an original basis for recruiting women in the reserves. In other words, if necessary, they can be called to serve again.

In case of the adoption of these legislative amendments by the parliament, the service of women in the Armenian army can be started this year—during the winter conscription.
