Gustav Klimt's painting Dame mit Facher (Lady with a Fan) has sold for 85.3 million pounds ($108.7 million), according to Sotheby's website.

This is a new auction record for an artwork and an artist's work in Europe. Also, this canvas became the second most expensive portrait ever sold at auction.

Dame mit Facher is the last painting of Klimt. The identity of the woman depicted on it is still unknown. Among its former owners are Klimt's friend and patron Erwin Bohl, and collector Rudolf Leopold. The latter had sold this painting in 1994 for $12 million.

Klimt is among the masters whose works are bought for nine-figure sums. In 2006, Ronald Lauder, a businessman and the son of the founder of a major cosmetics company, bought Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I for $135 million. And in 2017, Oprah Winfrey said she sold Klimt’s Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II to a Chinese entrepreneur for $150 million, Bloomberg reported.
