On Friday, the US Court of Appeals temporarily blocked a controversial ruling barring the Biden administration from communicating with social media companies, CNN reports.

Last week, a US District Judge in Louisiana barred a number of federal agencies and over a dozen senior government officials from communicating with social media companies about the removal of “content containing protected free speech” hosted on those platforms.

The order is part of a 2022 lawsuit accusing the US government of effectively silencing conservatives by putting pressure on private social media companies in an attempt to control misinformation about Covid-19 online.

The Justice Department filed an appeal against the ban, and the US Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals said Friday the appeal should be expedited. The ruling, however, will  be blocked for the time being.

The social networks mentioned in the lawsuit include, in particular, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, TikTok, WeChat and other platforms.
