YEREVAN. – French President Nikolas Sarkozy’s visit to the South Caucasus had a significant meaning both for Armenia and the region. Besides, the fact that Sarkozy spent about two days in Armenia compared to Georgia and Azerbaijan, where he stayed only several hours, is quite indicative, deputy head of the Caucasus Institute Aleksander Minasyan said Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Minasyan stated as well that Sarkozy’s visit had not only external political meaning but also internal. There are half million Armenians in France, hence half million potential electors. French President’s statements regarding Turkey, which were strong enough and surprising to some extent for Turkey, carried internal political meaning.

Besides, Sarkozy is unwilling that Turkey becomes EU member, this viewpoint is shared not only by French Armenians but also majority of French people. As a whole Sarkozy’s visit to Armenia was a successful one. It testifies that Armenia plays a great role in France’s priorities in the South Caucasus. Besides, France is the leading state in EU, the expert added.
